ORGANISERS of Royal Ascot have updated racegoers on its plans ahead of the races taking place behind closed doors.

Due to the coronavirus lockdown, there will be some restrictions in place in terms of how Royal Ascot will go ahead later this month.

Access to the Heath will be restricted meaning local residents won't be able to enjoy the races for the first time this year.

It will be closed to the public from June 16 to 20th following government guidelines on mass gatherings.

Ascot Racecourse will be only be accessed by essential workers from five hours before racing starts.

Guy Henderson, chief executive at Ascot Racecourse said: “It is sad that local residents won’t be able to enjoy Royal Ascot from the Heath but necessary to comply with public health regulations. Royal Ascot will be broadcast on ITV and Sky Sports Racing. We are also working on opportunities for the public to participate virtually through our digital channels and we will be saying more about that next week.

“The Heath will be open to the local community in the early morning and in the evenings during Royal Ascot.

"We look forward to being able to welcome the public back for racing when permitted.”

The Heath will be closed to the public between 8am and 5.30pm during Royal Ascot.

Mr Henderson added: “The understanding of the local community is much appreciated during these unprecedented times."
