A MAN running in the woods felt shocked when he came across a massive snake.

Anna Kavanagh posted a picture of the black snake which she believes is a Black Adder.

She explained her grandson Ellis came across the rare find in Swinley Forest in Crowthorne when he nearly stepped on it.

She said: "My grandson was out jogging and nearly trod in it! Only a couple of weeks ago he had never seen a snake in the UK before. He saw this one and another one in a week."

The adder, also known as the common European viper, is the only venomous snake native to the UK.

Adders are not seen as aggressive creatures and they will only use their venom as a last means of defence and this is usually if they are caught or trodden on.

About 100 people are bitten every year and the NHS said that it is important to get all snake bites checked immediately if you are bitten.
