A BOOK helping children to better understand the lockdown has been written by a married couple from Tilehurst.

Kathryn and Dan Allman have written Stuck Inside with the help of illustrator, Lisa Johnstone, to help families with young children explain what is going on and why it is important to stay indoors.

The married couple saw their own two-year-old daughter, Ariel, struggling with the lockdown particularly with why she was unable to see her family and nursery friends.

Kathryn and Dan thought the repetition of a book would help Ariel to understand the situation better.

Their original idea was to create a book with stickmen but after a plea for help on social media, Lisa Johnstone agreed to illustrate the book.

Stuck Inside highlights to children the changes in our daily routines due to the coronavirus pandemic such as why we can’t see family and friends.

It also explains why we have daily government briefings, why we stay in touch with loved ones on the phone and the importance of washing our hands.

Reading Chronicle:

Kathryn said they have never done anything like this before.

She decided to share their work because she thought there “might be other people in the same situation as us struggling to communicate to young children why it is a scary time for them”.

Kathryn said the book has helped Ariel to understand what is going on and she even gets excited to see Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on the TV because he features in her book.

Each page of the book has a rainbow for children to find too.

The book is available to read for free on www.stuckinsidebook.com.

There is also the opportunity to buy a hard copy of the book with profits going to NHS Charities and readers can also choose to donate to the couple’s chosen charity.

The fundraiser has raised £873 so far at the time of writing.
