VE Day is approaching and one group in Tilehurst is encouraging residents to celebrate the momentous anniversary by decorating their homes in red, white, and blue.

As the UK continues to be in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, celebrations for VE Day have had to be adapted.

Turn Tilehurst Red for Remembrance Sunday is asking people to celebrate the occasion still despite not being out to go outside.

The group organiser and founder, Kate Taylor, said the group is asking people to decorate their homes in red, white and blue and celebrate on bank holiday May 8.

People are also being asked to have afternoon tea and cake and listen to music whilst adhering to social distancing rules.

She said: “It’s just a bit of joy in this mad world we are living in.”

Since 2018, the group has urged residents in Tilehurst to celebrate Remembrance Sunday by asking people, schools, and businesses to decorate their homes and buildings with poppies.

The celebratory events include performances from a DJ and a choir and last year the water tower was lit up.

School students also pour pennies onto a giant poppy display in the Triangle.

The group is looking to celebrate the occasion again later in the year after lockdown but has turned its attention to VE Day which marks the 75th year since the formal end of World War Two.

When speaking about the importance of marking the day in lockdown, Ms Taylor said: “We have to remember why people went to war and we also need to remember what people gave up and that’s more relevant now.”

She said people are unable to see family and friends which is similar to what it would have been like in wartime.

She added we have a “few weeks of it but they were not with their families for months and years”.

Ms Taylor wants people to keep their decorations for Remembrance Sunday celebrations due to be held on Wednesday, November 11, this year.
