WOKINGHAM Borough Council have decided to begin demolition of the Carnival Pool and Fitness Centre, a month before it was set to officially close.

Wokingham council announced that demolition is to start today, April 20, followed by the development of a new carnival complex, featuring larger facilities as well as a library.

The decision to start demolition was made after the coronavirus outbreak meant the leisure complex would have to be shut regardless, despite the original closing date being May.

Demolition work will be carried out on behalf of the council by J Mould and it will adhere with the latest advice from Public Health England and the government.

Teams working on site will follow the advice from the Construction Leadership Council, including working with required social distancing, as well as following guidance on site access, handwashing, cleaning and avoiding close working.

Councillor Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, said: “We have made the decision to demolish the Carnival Pool and Fitness Centre now as it will cause less disruption and will ensure that, once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we can continue with this regeneration project at pace.

"The government’s current policy is that construction activity should continue where it can be undertaken in accordance with the Public Health England and industry guidance.

"I am assured our contractors have in place appropriate measures to ensure they are meeting these requirements."

Demolition work is expected to be completed by summer time this year.
