A FLAT was set on fire in Widnes on Friday evening.

A cordon was set up on Cherry Sutton, Hough Green as emergency services dealt with the blaze at 6.30pm.

Police and the fire service attended the ground floor flat at, part of a three-storey building.

Smoke alarms had gone off at the brick-built domestic property.

A cordon was set up and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to put out the flames.

A large fan was then used to clear smoke from the flat.

It was also used to clear smoke from the flats in the two storeys above it.

Firefighters left the scene once all the flats were safe.

They were in attendance for more than an hour-and-a-half.

The fire service says no-one was unaccounted for.

Police also attended the scene and are appealing for information about the fire, believed to have been started deliberately.
