A POOR heron has died after it was shot in the chest and left to suffer with its injuries for several days.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is hoping to find the person responsible following the birds death in Bracknell.

An inspector who works for the animal rescue discovered the heron had been shot after seeing a pellet wound to its chest.

She quickly rushed to the vets after noticing the heron had scrapes to its legs and damage to its chest following the bullet.

Jan Edwards, RSPCA inspector said: “This poor heron had been shot, with a pellet wound to the chest muscle and cavity, and was very dehydrated.

"The vets believe he had been shot a few days earlier because there were scrapes to the legs, suggesting the heron had been desperately trying to get around while unable to fly.

“It's very sad that anyone would do this to such a beautiful bird. We urge anyone with information about what happened or who knows who targeted the heron to call the RSPCA’s inspectorate appeal line in confidence on 0300 123 8018.”

The animal rescuer is now appealing for anyone with information to contact the charity with any information that can help find the person responsible.

It is against the law to kill or injure wild birds (expect under licence) and individuals can potentially face up to six months in prison, and an unlimited fine.

The RSPCA added: "If you see an animal in distress you can ring the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty line on 0300 123 4999."
