HUNDREDS of pupils could win prizes if they go green and walk, cycle or use public transport.

Garth Hill College and Easthampstead Park Schools in Bracknell have been chosen to take part in a Eco Rewards Scheme.

The initiative launched by Bracknell Forest Council (BFC) and The Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) will see the school take part in a nine month trial where participants record their journey choices by tapping their touch cards on special readers placed on routes specific to each school, or via an online form.

Councillor Chris Turrell, executive member of planning and transport, said: "We can all make a positive impact on the environment to tackle climate change. One way to do this is by making less car journeys, particularly at peak times, and choosing greener forms of transport.

“This trial scheme aims to demonstrate what impact greener forms of travel can have and how quickly and simply we can start to reduce our carbon footprint.

"By recording smarter journey choices via the readers, students can quickly see their points accumulate and could be rewarded for their efforts by receiving vouchers, discounts and cashback from a large number of online retailers."

Pupils who ditch getting dropped off at school by car and walk, cycle or use a bus will be rewarded in points where you could win a prize and retailer discounts.

BFC have said if the scheme is successful, it will be rolled out across other secondary schools in the Bracknell.

Cllr Turrell added: "We look forward to the trail getting under way in the coming months and seeing the positive results achieved.”
