According to the website Historic UK, "Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday".

It said: "Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients."

They explain the day falls 47 days before Easter Sunday which is why it varies each year.

This year, it falls on Tuesday, February 25.

To celebrate, Reading's leading homelessness prevention charity, Launchpad, is hosting a Pancake Race on the day.
