A GROUP of residents has caused a stir on social media after suggesting they want to clamp down on youths using electric scooters on roads.

A post from the Jennett's Park Community Association in Bracknell suggests they don't want people to use electric scooters on the roads in Jennett's.

It said: "Without wishing to dampen the Christmas spirit, on Santa's visit to JP [Jennett's Park] this year, he seems to have delivered a number of Nintendo Switch consoles and electric scooters.

"The latter CANNOT be used legally on the public highway - that includes the road and footpaths."

Further down the post, it says the police have powers to issue section 59 warning notices and seize the electric scooter if they witness it being used on roads.

One councillor expressed his concerns over the ban of electric scooters calling it 'grim times'.

Lib Dem Councillor Thomas Parker said: "Grim times when the Jennett's Park Community Association has come out against e-scooters.

"We can't complain kids have nothing to do and then ban them from doing things like riding a scooter.

"Not my ward, but poorly thought through decision and messaging nonetheless."

The JPCA has suggested that the law needs to be enforced to stop people from riding electric scooters on the public highway.

As well as this, the community association suggested that the police could stop and prosecute e-scooter riders on private land

Cllr Mary Temperton agrees that although they are illegal, it is very low priority for the police to enforce such laws given how overstretched the force currently is.

She said: "Classified as 'Personal light electric vehicles’ so not subject to tax or registration.

"Therefore cannot be legally ridden on roads, pavements or public spaces, only on private land. However, enforcement is a very low priority for police."

Previous ward member for Great Hollands North, Peter Hill thinks electric scooters are good idea and make for cheap and sustainable transport.

Clarification: The News originally published Jennett's Park Community Association suggest electric scooters 'shouldn't be used in public' but this has since been amended to say that they want the law to be enforced to clamp down on illegal scooters on roads.
