AN iconic Reading landmark has been cast into a sea of red to mark Remembrance Day.

Thames Water’s Tilehurst Water Tower will be lit up on the evenings of November 7, 8, 9 and 10 to align with other Remembrance events being held in Tilehurst Village.

It became the centre of attention last year when a professional lighting company installed temporary coloured lights around its base, meaning the normally white structure glowed red for the three days leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Passers-by stopped their cars to take photos while others even made a special trip along Park Lane just to see it.

Site manager Stuart Hamblin said: “The ‘Turn Tilehurst Red’ campaign last year did a great job of bringing the community together to remember those who fought for our country and we at Thames Water were honoured to be part of it.

"Within a week of the lights being taken down last year people were asking if we’d do it again in 2019 and we’ve been approached by various groups and charities throughout the year asking if we can light the tower up for them too, so it’s definitely back by popular demand.

"We’re really pleased to be lending our support.”

The lighting for the tower is again being provided by Stanley Electric and APS UK Ltd, while Tilehurst resident Kate Taylor, who coordinated last year’s commemorations, has been busy rallying the support of schools, shops and other businesses who will be decorating their buildings in the theme of footprints and poppies.

A number of activities to raise funds for the Royal British Legion have also been arranged at Tilehurst Triangle today (November 8) where special badges depicting the Tilehurst Water Tower when it was lit up last year, will be on sale in aid of the Poppy Appeal.

Kate said: “It’s brilliant that the Tilehurst Water Tower will be lit up again this year and we’re grateful to Thames Water and the lighting experts for making it happen.

"It’s a lovely way to mark Remembrance weekend.”
