AN equine charity is in desperate need for extra funding after being unable to rescue more injured horses.

The charity Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines (SAFE) in Wokingham helps hundreds of abandoned horses who are injured and need medical care.

However, the organisation feels 'snowed under' due to having little land and not space to take in more ponies and horses.

Alison Stratford, founder of SAFE, said: "We are really struggling with funding. We are a small charity were our reputation for helping horses has reached so many people that we are inundated with requests and reports.

"We are full to the brim with little land, not enough volunteers and certainly not enough funding because we cannot get businesses to fund us or regular donations."

A recent example includes a call from one elderly resident in Ascot who reportedly spotted an abandoned horse needing 'urgent medical care'.

But due to the overwhelming demand, the charity was unable to help the horse.

Vivienne Ballico, a resident from Wokingham, said: "As a long standing supporter of SAFE, I am saddened to read that due to lack of funds, the charity will no longer be able to take in any more horses or ponies.

"The current volunteers behind SAFE have been absolutely heroic and worked tirelessly to rescue horses and ponies in need and in all kinds of weather."
