AN ordinary cafe in Ascot has been collecting bras in a bid to help Kenyan women feel more empowered.

The No 6 eatery located in Warren Row has been utilised as a bra collection point by a resident who wanted to help The Black Isle Group Big Foundation.

Katrina Sexton from Sunningdale asked her friends if they have any unwanted bras they could donate and she didn't expect to get as many bras as she did.

She said: "It's such an uplifting thing that people have come together to help this cause.

"Women take bras for granted, we don't even think that it is something we need but for women in Kenya it gives them a real sense of security, protects their modesty and allows them to feel more comfortable when out working." On Thursday (October 17) The Big Foundation visited the cafe to collect around a thousand bras, which will be delivered to Kenya in the next couple of weeks.

She said: "It's really heartwarming and it is restoring my faith in humanity.

"The number of stories from people are so touching. One man donated a bag of bras after he sadly lost his wife to breast cancer. He realised that once he donated the bras he could move on.

"An old lady also donated a bag of bras and it gave her a reason to get out of the house. So it's just touching to hear the stories behind the donations."

Beth had a lightbulb moment when she visited Kenya as part of a volunteering family holiday in 2017.

A woman in one of the villages explained that the one thing she could do to help is simply bras. Bras are something that women cannot afford out because they'd rather spend the money on food.

The 46-year-old said: "We take them for granted in this developed world. Funnily enough, bras actually help women out there to stay in education longer because wearing a bra protects their modesty and gives them more confidence to work."

So far, the charity has managed to collect around 2,000 bras, to be delivered to Kenya which is an "unbelievable amount" according to the mum of two.
