A FRENCH oil painting has sold for a whopping £60,000 at an auction sale in Wokingham.

The 1921 painting by Henri Manguin was bought by a woman from East Sussex and purchased it directly form the artist's family.

Art enthusiasts will recognise the painting from residing in exhibitions in The World's Fair in New York in 1960.

The painting then returned to France having been purchased by a Paris gallery and the hefty price tag is a record for Wokingham Auctions on their third anniversary sale.

A set of Chinese ceramic bowls and vases sold for £10,000 to a Beijing buyer, which were originally sold by a couple from Henley.

A single-owner collection of gold sovereigns and coins racked up £30,000 and a selection of 19th century London Illustrated News made £1,250 from a deceased estate in Wargrave.
