The village of Wargrave is home to the best overall GP practice in Reading and West Berkshire, according to a new survey of patients.

Wargrave Practice received the top score for patient satisfaction out of the 47 doctors’ surgeries in the West Berkshire CCG area in the 2019 NHS Patient Survey.

Of the patients that responded, 98 per cent said their overall experience was good or very good.

In second place was The Boat House Surgery in Pangbourne, where 96 per cent of patients said they were content with their experience.

However, not everywhere fared so well.

The South Reading & Shinfield Group Medical Practice finished bottom of the pile, with just two thirds of patients – 66 per cent – saying they were happy with their experience.

At Kennet Surgery on Cholmeley Rd, Reading, only 70 per cent of patients who responded to the survey seemed satisfied.

Where is it best and worse to make an appointment?

For many people, it’s booking an appointment that’s the most important thing about a surgery.

The 2019 survey asks patients how easy it is to make appointments at their surgery.

The surgery where most patients had a good experience with booking appointments is Peppard Road Surgery in Caversham. Here, 96 per cent were satisfied.

And the number one surgery overall, Wargrave, fared well for appointments in second place.

At the other end of the scale, less than half of patients at South Reading and Shinfield Group Medical Practice – 45 per cent – said they had a good experience booking appointments.

And Falkland Surgery in Newbury fared little better, at 46 per cent.

Reading Chronicle:

What does the CCG have to say?

Overall, the average satisfaction score for West Berkshire is 84 per cent - a little better than the national average of 83 per cent.

Our surgeries have also maintained their patient ratings from last year, when the satisfaction rating was also 83 per cent.

Spokesperson for West Berkshire CCG Sally Moore said: “It’s very pleasing to see the majority of our surgeries performing so well again this year, and above the national average.

“It’s a credit to them and their teams that they have maintained such high approval ratings, especially as primary care has been involved in major changes over the last few months with the introduction of Primary Care Networks (PCNs).

“This has seen clusters of neighbouring GP practices joining forces to form a PCN. The aim is to bring a more joined up health and social care service closer to people’s homes.

“Over time, PCNs will widen the services they provide so local people will have easy access to mental health teams, clinical pharmacists, physiotherapists and other professionals.

“The introduction of PCNs is part of the Government’s Long Term Plan for the NHS to transform health care  and we’ve been working to a very tight deadline to get PCNs established. We’re very grateful to our GPs and their staff for the huge amount of work they’ve put in to establishing their Networks whilst, at the same time, keeping their day to day services running as smoothly as they can.

“We’ll be studying the data from this survey over the next few weeks to pinpoint any areas that have been identified as needing some improvement, and then working closely with our PCNs to bring about any necessary changes to make sure our patients are receiving the best possible health and social care."
