REPORTS earlier today of an 'unexploded bomb' in Finchampstead have been quashed after police comfirm the 'bomb' was in fact a rock.

Police and The Ministry of Defence were informed this morning, and a 'bomb squad' was sent to a field next to Hogwoods Farm, Sheerlands Road.

Shocked residents had taken to Facebook to work out what was happening.

One Facebook message posted to the group Earley Residents Discussion Board said: 'An unexploded bomb has been found in a field near the A327 Reading Road, Finchampstead.'

The reports were made at around 10am this morning, but police confirmed in the afternoon that the object was not a bomb.

A spokesperson posted on Thames Valley Police Wokingham's Twitter page: 'We can confirm that reports of a possible discovery of unexploded ordinance in #Finchampstead was in fact...a rock.

'We would like to thank everyone for their patience while Police and MOD carried out their procedures.'

Speaking to The Chronicle, a spokesman said: "Thames Valley Police received a report from a member of the public that ordnance had been located off Sheerlands Road, Arborfield Garrison, at around 9.22am today (16/5).

"Officers attended the scene and following inspection by the EOD it was concluded that the item was not ordnance."
