An AMBITIOUS firefighter will be pushing a wheelbarrow while running a marathon everyday for 37 days across five countries.

Scott Butler who is a firefighter at Wokingham fire station will be setting off on his journey on Thursday, May 30 to undertake his most physical challenge yet.

The 37-year-old from Devon, will be running nearly 1000 miles with his belongings in a wheelbarrow from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus and Ukraine.

He said: "When you see a man running in Lycra pushing a wheelbarrow then you are generally in disbelief. It is something different and it is definitely going to be amusing as I have had people stare already.

"I am pretty excited but will be nervous when I step foot on the plane. Running across five countries could mean that I take a wrong turn or injure myself."

The 37 day marathon will aim to raise money for the International Animal Rescue which rescue animals from suffering, such as bears and orangutans and then release them into their natural environment.

Scott said he chose this charity because he is an 'animal lover' and wanted to support a smaller organisation.

This is not the first challenge Scott will be doing, as he will also be rowing the Atlantic from Lanzarote to Antigua in January 2020 with a crew as part of a research project with Oxford Brookes University into Parkinson's disease.

However, the Wokingham firefighter will be running completely on his own.

He added: "You will never be ready for something like this but it is a mindset and if you want something that badly anyone can do it, you just have to have that mindset."

The wheelbarrow, which was donated by Haemmerlin has been designed with special handles for support and comfort and Scott will keep all of his belongings inside it while he treks for 970 miles.

He will also be updating his supportive family and friends via social media on facebook.com/splitlipadventures.
