WOKINGHAM lions club have organised their first members and presentation evening at the town hall.

The purpose of the event at Wokingham town hall was to distribute £5,500 to local charities and to attract prospective new members to the club.

Debbie Slay, president of Wokingham Lions Club, said: “We had a chance to celebrate what has been a great year for us.

“We distributed some of the funds we have raised and learned how these donations will be used positively within our local community.”

During the evening the Gerry Aggett Award was presented to Chris Pape for her services to the community. She has worked for many years in order to help the homeless and has taken them into her home.

Ms Aggett was given a cheque worth £1,000 for Yeldall Manor, a residential rehabilitation centre in Hare Hatch near Reading.

Cheques were also presented to representatives of local charities including WADE, Macmillan Cancer Support and Berkshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.
