STUDENTS dined at a popular pub with their families to learn about what constitutes as healthy eating with a specially cooked three course dinner.

Cheapside School pupils visited the The Thatched Tavern on Monday (March 25) and enjoyed a healthy meal cooked by the pubs own chef.

They were encouraged to try foods with less sugar and fat content, such as baked sweet potato and chicken and a low in sugar fruit sorbet for desert.

One mother said: “I think this is a brilliant initiative and am really pleased to see my daughter so enthusiastic about the environment and healthy eating - even though it is a slight uphill struggle to get her to make healthy choices."

The Thatched Tavern in Cheapside hosted the food education evening, with a menu inspired by John Cross who is a local landscape gardener.

John believes families and children should be taught on how to ditch the take-away and enjoy a tasty and healthy meal.

Pupils from Cheapside School tucked into a baked chicken and sweet potato wedges meal, with homemade coleslaw and baked beans as one healthy option.

Vegetarians dived into the pubs 'Growing Together Vegetable Curry' with the chefs own coconut rice and chapatis.

For desert, families tucked into a fruit sorbet and were served a low in calorie fruit punch drink.
