AN inquest into the death of a teenager who died at Wokingham Station after being electrocuted has been opened.

James Fennell died on February 1 and officers were called to the train station at around 11.20pm following the incident.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and his family set up a fundraising page to help with funeral expenses.

Heidi Connor, chief coroner for Berkshire, officially opened the inquest on Tuesday, confirming the cause of death as electrocution.

She said: “Mr Fennel was from Bracknell and was born on October 22, 1999. His identification was confirmed by sergeant James Smith of Thames Valley Police.

“The exact circumstances remain to be determined, but it would appear there was contact with the live line at Wokingham Station and the cause of death following post-mortem examination is electrocution.

“This matter is now the subject of further investigations and will be listed for inquest. Interested persons will be notified in due course.

“I would like to give my condolences to family and friends at this sad time.”

Mr Fennell was described as an ‘amazing lad’ and the fundraising page set up by his family has seen more than £6,500 raised.

Messages of support have been posted on the donation page. One said: “A cheeky and lovable young man, lots of fond memories of you all growing up together.”

Another posted: “I remember babysitting many years ago and James sticking stickers all over my face that brings a smile to it now.”

Floral tributes were left outside Wokingham Station, including a message from James’ mother Carol, a candle and an Arsenal football shirt.

British Transport Police were called to Wokingham Station at around 11.20pm and the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
