A SCHOOL is looking for a crossing patrol officer to improve road safety measures on its busy main road.

Garth Hill College in Bracknell, posted the job opportunity on social media, calling for a crossing patroller after a few 'near misses' of students being hit by cars.

Nick Huskinson, Leader of the travel plan at Garth Hill College, said: "We have repeatedly advertised the position over a long period of time and it remains a high priority for the college to fill this vacancy as it helps keep our pupils safe on their journey."

On January 11, a schoolgirl was struck by a car while crossing Bull Lane to go to school however escaped with minor injuries.

The girl was walking to Garth Hill College and attempted to cross the road before a car hit her, leaving Daniel Knight a nearby resident feeling 'frustrated' with the 'ongoing issue' of poor safety measures.

Currently, there is only a 20mph sign and temporary no loading lines outside the school but this still make its difficult for students to cross the bust main road.

Daniel Knight, who campaigns for road safety, said: "Garth Hill have been looking at getting a crossing person for a long time now before the accident. Unfortunately, no one wants to do the job.

"A crossing patroller doesn't do much to protect the general public from speeding cars - unfortunately."

Residents have been calling for action after the girl was hit, trying to make the road outside Garth Hill College safer for students to cross.

Nick added: "School crossing patrollers play an important role in the local community, yet there is currently a nationwide shortage.

"We are keen to recruit to this role as it will offer an invaluable service to the college".
