A RESIDENT has voiced her concern after a toilet door which collapsed recently was reinstated by the council.

Muriel Gater, from Wooden Hill, Bracknell went to use the toilets at the side of the Birch Hill shops when the door came crashing down on Friday, February 8.

The door fell off when she tried to use it, causing her to hurt her arm. She remains adamant that she did not see a sign on the door before entering the toilets.

She said: “I saw someone I knew after the event and they said there was a sign on the door saying not to use the toilet. I feel the council are being negligent; they should have either secured it shut,

or totally removed it.”

Bracknell Forest Council (BFC) launched an investigation after the incident, with Ms Gater saying someone could have been seriously hurt.

A spokesman for BFC said: “We are sorry to hear someone has hurt themselves when closing the door.

“We are undertaking a thorough investigation into this matter as there was no indication that the door was faulty in any way when it was opened that morning.

“As part of the investigation we will look into whether the strong winds from Storm Erik affected the integrity of the door when it was left open prior to the incident by a member of the public.”

The council’s cleaning contractor was informed about the door and was called to the site before it was fixed.

Muriel added: “I am surprised that they have stuck the door back on because it’s so heavy and it makes me think, are they trying to wait for someone to be killed.

“If it did fall over, they could replace the door with a heavy sliding door, which I think would be a better thing for them to do.

“I personally don’t believe it was windy on Friday and this is just an excuse. I also don’t believe that the cleaners would be trained properly to do a health and safety check on the door.”

The brackets to the door have been replaced and the toilet facility is now back in full use.
