CARE home residents had an exciting animal filled morning to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Larkland House in Ascot hosted a nature filled day by inviting Mill Cottage Farm to join them ahead of the birdwatch.

Residents at the care home got to play with guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks and chicks, along with taking part in other wildlife activities.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which encourages people from across the UK to count the birds in their garden so the charity can monitor trends and understand how the species is doing.

Data from over half a million of people is then compared, year-on-year to provide a snapshot of bird statistics across the nation.

Shawndell Barker, care home manager said: "It may be one of the first events of the year, but the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is always a highlight for residents and team members alike.

"Spending time outdoors and connecting with the nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people - particularly those living with dementia.

"While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sound and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation for residents."

The event was publicly open to the community and guests got to interact with activities related to birds, a wildlife quiz, a bird-themed singalong and a cream tea prepared by the Larkland House chefs.

The home also invited Mill Cottage Farm to join them ahead of the birdwatch, where there will be a variety of animals, including baby chicks and ducks for the residents to meet with.

Shawndell added: "We're delighted to be taking part in the world's largest garden wildlife survey once again this year, and to be playing our part in such an important study."
