A DRIVER who caused the death of a pensioner by attempting to overtake six cars has shared his harrowing story in an effort to encourage others not to make the same mistake.

David Lamb was jailed for three years after causing the death of John Richardson by dangerous driving.

He was travelling on the A35 when he caused serious injuries to the 82-year-old, who died three months later.

Thames Valley and Hampshire Police shared his story  to discourage other drivers from speeding or driving recklessly.

Lamb said: “My driving was bad. We would often race around and tear about and have a laugh as young lads will do.

“Driving fast on a regular basis made me confident in my ability to drive. I had no accidents and in hindsight I just got lucky I guess.”

Mr Richardson suffered life-threatening chest injuries and died at Southampton General Hospital.

He then met the victim’s family through the restorative system.

Lamb added: "I really felt like a killer. You never think it is something you are capable of.

“I had to listen about how the accident had impacted their lives and the loss of their loved one, which is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

“I was very fortunate to have my meeting with such reasonable, understanding and forgiving people.

“I would have just seen some young boy racer who is tearing around and killed my dad. I am very grateful for that.”
