A PRIMARY school is 'delighted' to have been shortlisted for an award for encouraging pupils to live a 'healthy and active lifestyle'.

St Michael's C of E Primary school in Sandhurst is nominated as Active Primary School of the Year at the Get Berkshire Active Awards, along with two other schools.

The awards highlights the success of individuals and organisations who make sport and physical activity happen in communities across Berkshire. The awards evening wants to thank those who give their time to ensure sport and physical activity is available to everyone.

Marie Bird, headteacher at the school said: "I share the whole schools delight in being nominated for the Get Berkshire Active Award for achievement in sport and physical activity.

"At the heart of everything we do at St Michael's is a desire to inspire and challenge our pupils in all aspects of school life."

Key stage 1 pupils have taken part in a tag-rugby coaching scheme, a visit to Chelsea F.C. for a multi-skills session and the football team winning the Bracknell Schools League.

Along with this the school has highlighted other successful moments such as cyclists winning silver at the school games at Bisham Abbey, podium titles at Bracknell Forests cross-country event at South Hill Park and regular visits to Ambarrow Woods.

Marie added: "For many years now St Michael's has prioritised learning outside the classroom which includes regular visits to Ambarrow Woods for all classes and at at least once a year whole school visits.

"In 2016 we planned a whole school trip to the Olympic Park where at the end of our visit we were fortunate enough to be invited to view a diving masterclass from Tom Daley, his coach and partners."

"The benefits of their commitment can be seen in the increase in the number of children taking part in sport, increased self -esteem, greater resilience, team work and a wonderful sense of pride in the achievements of our children."

The awards evening will be held at Friday, 15 February at the Hilton Hotel in Reading.
