NEW research from the British Red Cross reveals that 50% of adults across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire don’t feel part of their local community.

In the new survey The British Red Cross asked over 4,000 adults across the two boroughs about their involvement with the community.

The survey found that a total of 49% of residents have become less involved in their community and 47% feel their neighbours are strangers.

The research shows 62% of people in the boroughs are not actively involved in doing anything with their community.

Chris Reed, director of volunteer mobilisation at the British Red Cross, said: "Social isolation and loneliness are serious and widespread issues.

“The findings of this research show why we must do more to help people stay in touch with their communities and build support networks in their local area."

The British Red Cross are urging people to volunteer to re-connect with their community and meet new people.

Chris added: "By volunteering with the Red Cross you can make a real difference in your community whilst meeting new people and learning new skills.

"Whatever your experience, and no matter how much time you have to give, we can all play a part in building kinder, more connected communities."

The new findings add to the charities research on social isolation and loneliness across the UK.
