CO-FOUNDERS of Honest Burgers have shared what makes their burgers different from other butchers.

Tom Barton and Phillip Eales visited their Honest Burger restaurant in Reading to showcase their beef burgers, cooked fresh from the kitchen.

Honest Burgers first opened as a small London chain in 2010 at Brixton Market but there is now 30 restaurants across the UK. The Reading restaurant is located just off the corner of the Market Place and opened in December last year.

I was invited there to find out how the burgers they produce are different to what we can already buy.

It was clear from talking to the Co-founders where the idea of their burger came from. It quickly became apparent that they are firm believers that other restaurants and pubs use frozen flavourless pork and beef mince.

The pair wanted to produce a new burger with better high-quality ingredients. From first impressions they have achieved this through Honest Burgers, as a costumer you know exactly what you are buying.

I was surprised to learn they are the first chefs to not mince their burgers and use machinery called a bowel chopper to keep in all the natural flavours.

Their demonstration proved that nothing is just thrown together, the ingredients are kept simple and all that goes into them is the best British beef, salt and pepper. That’s the secret to what makes their burgers so honest.

After finding out what goes into their recipe, I wasn’t sure what to expect when plates of freshly cooked burgers appeared. For the purpose of the demonstration they were served by themselves, a scary thought for someone who likes a burger with lots of toppings.

All the burgers are served as medium rare without a choice of anything else, however they don’t disappoint because they taste juicy and extremely salty. I was told that this means the natural flavours still come through even when toppings are added.

The design of the restaurant is also something that must be given credit, with a high ceiling, plenty of seating and exposed pipes the whole room is both warm and inviting.

I just couldn’t leave without placing an order of my own, toppings and all. As it’s December it was only fitting to try the Christmas Burger consisting of beef, smoked bacon, deep-fried camembert, cranberry sauce and rocket with salted chips.

I never thought the taste of Christmas could be put into one burger, but I was proven wrong, they are one of the best burgers in town.
