A CARE home in Wokingham has been doing its bit to raise awareness for dementia and children's charities by getting the community involved in festive activities.

Residents at Lord Harris Court care home in Sindlesham took part in raising money for the Alzheimer's Society and Save the Children by spreading Christmas cheer.

Carol Green, home activities coordinator said: "Creating a better understanding around dementia within the local community is really important to our home, as of course, some of our residents are affected."

Residents dressed up in elf costumes and Christmas jumpers before posing for photos in a festive frame.

Cecil Underwood loved having his photo taken and thought it was 'hilarious' dressing up as Santa.

Around 20 pupils from Beaverwood Primary School joined in and sung carols to the residents.

Ms Green added: "It was lovely and really moving, a nice coming together of young and old."

Families and friends were also invited to join in on the fun and regularly popped into the care home to visit loved ones.

A total of £50 was raised by the elderly residents which was well achieved as they 'did it all by themselves'.

Linda Goddard, area manager for Alzheimers Society Berkshire said: "It is so touching and wonderful when peopple within the community, who have the least resources fundraise for Alzheimer's Society. This truly is the spirit of Christmas.

"We'd like to thank the staff and residents of Lord Harris Court for their generosity and for uniting against dementia with us."

The home activities coordinator said: "Our residents and their families had a great time taking photos dressed in their Christmas jumpers and outfits.

"We turned the resident's photos into Christmas cards for them to send to their families. It proved to be a wonderful coming together of all ages to support two very important causes."
