When efforts to find a replacement ‘lollipop lady’ outside Crowthorne Primary school failed in 1985, parents and staff voiced their concerns about the road safety issues on one of the areas busiest roads.

Despite a prolonged campaign to find someone to take over the crossing patrol, which involved delivering 1,000 leaflets and placing adverts in shop windows, nobody had come forward.

Headteacher Rev Brian Measures warned his pupils to be constantly on the alert and take great care when crossing the road and he admitted to the Bracknell News:” All we can do is hope they will heed what we say, but it would only take one moment’s forgetfulness for something terrible to happen.”

An urgent appeal to the county road safety office explaining the hazards had been sent requesting the provision of either a zebra crossing or light-controlled pelican crossing.

Sir William Van Straubenzee and the prospective Conservative candidate, John Redwood appeared together for the first time in public since the sitting MP announced his forthcoming retirement.

The occasion was the local tory associations Christmas family fair, held at the town hall which attracted a steady flow of visitors and swelled the organisations coffers by £1,000.

Mr Redwood had recently been selected by the Wokingham Conservative branch as prospective parliamentary candidate.

The district branch of the Cancer-After-Care Association held their annual bazaar in the Binfield Scout Hut which also raised the profile the aims of the group.

The £130 raised at the event would be used to help give practical and emotional support to cancer sufferers and their families.

Children from Wildridings Infant School took to the stage 33 years ago, to recreate the “good old days” of old-time music hall entertainment.

Having rehearsed for the previous six weeks the pupils presented their Christmas production to parents and traditionally-costumed teachers, who also joined in the singing, dancing and recitals.

Edgbarrow School’s PTA Christmas Fair and Book Mart raised £530 by selling hundreds of books in 1985, and the organisers announced they were very satisfied that it had been held (for the first time) outside the school.

Committee treasurer, Vivienne Bowler, told the News:” The change of venue to the Morgan Centre was a great success and we will use it again next year.”

19-year-old Leanne Bosher proved she was a ‘cut above the rest’ by scooping a major hairstyling award at the annual Association of Hairdressing Teachers’ competition in Aldershot.

In front of an audience of 800 guests, Leanne collected her cup and certificate and took it back to The New Concept salon in Sunningdale, for the sixth year in a row.
