WOKINGHAM Borough Council are reminding residents of the changes to recycling and waste collections over Christmas
During Christmas and New Year, the Wokingham Borough Council are urging residents to expect a two-day delay on collections. The collections will start earlier than normal, and the council are advising residents to leave their rubbish out the night before.
During the festive season more rubbish is collected but several tips have been provided in order to help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill. These include avoiding buying
metallic or plastic-based wrapping paper that cannot be put in black recycling boxes, buying fruit and vegetables loose, using up leftovers and breaking down cardboard boxes.
Councillor Norman Jorgensen, executive member for Environment, Sports, Environmental Health, Leisure and Libraries, said: “Inevitably, most of us produce more waste over the Christmas period. However, I hope that by following some of these easy tips we can minimise how much goes to landfill.”
Rubbish can be taken to recycling centres, recycling centres at Smallmead, Island Road, Reading, and Longshot Lane, Bracknell are open during the holiday period apart from Tuesday, December 25, Wednesday, December 26 and Tuesday, January 1.
Councillor Norman Jorgensen added: “Our re3 recycling centres can take old or unwanted items as well as real Christmas trees.”
A copy of the winter edition of Wokingham Borough News will be delivered to households containing information about Christmas waste and recycling collections. The collection times for over Christmas can also be found by visiting www.wokingham.gov.uk
Recycling and waste collections will go back to normal Monday, January 14.
