AN INVESTIGATION is underway after passengers were forced to evacuate a bus which caught fire today.

Yesterday, at 12:53pm, fire crews were called to Shute End in Wokingham after receiving reports of a bus fire.

Crews from Wokingham and Wokingham Road Fire Stations and an officer were sent to the scene.

A spokesman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue service said: "Firefighters found a fire on a double decker bus, so four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished it using two hose reels."

Shute End is open between its junctions with Station Road and Broad Street.

A Reading Buses spokesman added: "We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a fire in Wokingham town centre today. No customers or the driver were injured and all evacuated off the bus safely.

"The cause is as yet unknown and will be investigated. There is no heightened risk to any similar vehicle as we believe this to be a one-off incident."
