A MAJOR police investigation is underway after a woman was attacked and raped in a graveyard.

A woman was raped by a man who she had met during a night out between 1-2am on November 8 at the rear of St Laurence Church in the town centre.

The offender is described as a white man with bushy eyebrows, dark coloured eyes and with hair that was longer on the top and short on the sides.

He was casually dressed, but there is no further description of clothing at this time.

The victim, a woman in her 30s, flagged down a police officer and reported the offence at around 3.30am.

She is being support by specially trained officers.

Detective constable Connor Hatton, of Force CID at Reading, said: “Our investigation is in its very early stages, but I would like to appeal to anybody who believes they witnessed anything unusual or suspicious between about 1am and 2am today near to St Laurence Church, to call the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 43180341077.

“There is currently a scenewatch in place at the churchyard, and the community will notice an increased police presence while we continue our investigation.
