A PRIMARY school in Arborfield is on the mend after a disastrous Ofsted report last year.

In June 2016 The Coombes Church of England Primary School was put under special measures following an inadequate rating.

Amongst a raft of concerns inspectors found that teachers' expectations of pupils were too low, English and maths progress targets were being missed and children with disabilities were not receiving effective support.

And year on however, and the school has begun to turn things around.

In a monitoring inspection conducted on May 16 and 17 this year, Ofsted's Lucy English found that school leaders and managers were working well towards the removal of special measures, with a strong improvement plan in place.

Councillor Mark Ashwell, executive member for children’s services at Wokingham Borough Council, praised the effort of staff and pupils.

He said: “We’re very proud that HMI has recognised the hard work of the whole community during the past year. It’s been a real team effort. The Coombes is now well placed to continue its positive journey.

“It is also heartening to see in the HMI report how proud the children are of their school. They’re also looking forward to welcoming their new permanent headteacher, who will be starting shortly.”
