THE CROWNTHORNE community came out in full force on Monday to beckon in spring with their annual May Day Fair.

Held from 12pm on the Morgan Recreation Ground, around 3,000 people took in a feast of activities.

For the younger ones, Percy’s Horses clip-clopped around the park while Sam the Engine - a motor driven, tyre resting train - chugged dutifully along.

As well as a fine selection of beer, cider and hotdogs, adults were treated to performances from the Sandhurst Community Brass Band, Yateley Morris Dancers and the Laura Henderson Dancers.

Sarah Dewson, part of the Fair’s organising committee, said: “The whole place was upbeat and excited in a way we weren’t expecting because the weather forecast was terrible.

“In the end the weather was fine and we were surprised and honoured by how many people came.

“The May Fair committee is known for meeting down the pub. We don’t take the whole thing too seriously, which is why it is so much fun.”

Although a final count has yet to be made, it is expected around £10,000 was raised for the nine charities supported by St John the Baptist Church.

Mrs Dewson, who has been on the committee for 11 years, thanked Chair Dave Rance and Deputy Chair Mike Thackray for their hard work getting the Fair together.
