THE top young climbers in the country took part in a national competition in Wokingham last weekend.

Around 200 young people aged 10 to 18 took part in the competition at the Oakwood Climbing Centre, in Waterloo Road on Sunday, April 2.

Organised by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), each separate age group battled it out in the qualifying rounds during the morning session, before the grand final later in the day.

“It all went very well,” said Tony Pudner, who owns the climbing centre. “The finalists were given five puzzles to solve and they had five attempts to make their way to the top.

“The BMC set the problems quite hard as we are talking about the best crop of climbers in the country.”

The 61-year-old added: “We’ve only been open for around six weeks and we are undoubtedly one of the best facilities in the country and to have a competition like this so soon is quite a coup.”

Tony’s plan for the facility is to have the Paralympians from Team GB use it as their training base in the near future and, he is hopeful Prince Harry will be on hand to make a visit.

“We have invited him along,” Tony said. “We are waiting to hear back from him but hopefully he will be interested because we know it is very close to his heart and is involved with Invictus.”
