SILLY socks will be the uniform of the day at a Bracknell primary school in honour of its very own star pupil.

Sandy Lane will be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day next Tuesday for four and half year old Bonnie, who started in Reception last September.

Children and teachers will be celebrating by wearing odd socks or ‘silly’ socks, in order to promote the idea that there is nothing with being different and that it should be seen positively.

The school will also be holding a cake sale on the day.

Donations of 50p will all go towards Stepping Stones, an organisation set up to help those with Down Syndrome and support their families.

Bonnie’s mother Tracy Burks has expressed her gratitude towards the school for its continuous support for Bonnie and the fact that everybody at the school knows and is friends with her.

She said: “The whole school is supporting this as they absolutely love Bonnie and many of them have learnt Makaton to communicate with her as she is non-verbal.

“They have so spread so much love and awareness and everyone is totally inclusive and accepting. I want to show how other schools how wonderful it is to have special needs children in mainstream schools.”

Donations are welcome, and anyone can become involved with the ‘Silly Socks’ movement by posting pictures and using the hashtag WDSD or ‘lotsofsocks’.

Just £5 to £10 is enough money to provide a child with Down Syndrome 30 minutes of sensory activity time.
