FIRE fighters were called to decontaminate asbestos-covered overalls which had split open after falling off a lorry in a busy Bracknell road.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service officials were called to the scene in Bagshot Road outside The Horse and Groom restaurant following reports that the bags had fallen into the road this afternoon. (Wednesday, September 9).

A spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police confirmed officers were alerted to the incident at 1.45pm but the bags were found to be professionally-sealed hazardous material bags.

The bags have since been checked, sealed and removed.

She confirmed the road had reopened at 3pm.

Ellie Gray, a spokeswoman for the fire service, said inital reports suggested the spillage was much larger than it turned out to be.

She said: "We were called at 2:01pm by Thames Valley Police to reports of a possibly hazardous waste.

"We sent four pumps and our hazardous environmental response unit and a multi-role vehicle.

"The stop message was sent at 2.35pm. The waste was rebagged and made safe and handed to the Highways Agency to arrange disposal."
