THE fire brigade has stressed the importance of checking smoke alarms after a pan of sausages caused a kitchen fire.

A man living at the terraced house in Knightswood, Birch Hill had a smoke alarm but it was not in working order and it failed to go off when the pan caught light at 10pm last night (Tuesday).

The 66-year-old eventually became aware of the fire but David Woozley, watch manager of Bracknell fire station, which attended the incident, said: "It would have been caught earlier if the resident had had an operational smoke detector.

"The smoke devastation to the house is a lot. The kitchen is absolutely wrecked." The fire had spread to the kitchen cupboards and firefighters spent an hour putting it out and airing the house.

The fire brigade offers to install fire alarms for free. See www.rbfrs.co.uk
