On Friday night (March 22), CUBED celebrates two years of monthly club nights at SUB89 Reading.
It's been quite a journey and has seen acts as diverse as Disclosure and Crystal Castles taking to the six-sided booth.
Back in March 2011, CUBED began as a monthly sister night for Skint Mondays, taking the night's eclectic music policy and regular guests. Launching the night were Olugbenga of Metronomy, a brilliant
mash-up DJ, and electro duo Joe & Will Ask. More than 500 people attended and the night was a big success.
Over the next six months, the guests varied greatly, including DJ sets from members of The Libertines, Mystery Jets and Crystal Castles, as well as DJ award winners Santero and Mighty Atom of The Disablists. In October 2011, CUBED began to evolve with bigger club-focused acts and more local DJs playing support slots.
Jack Beats and Erol Alkan, acts previously better known for headlining festival dance tents and clubs like Fabric, both played their debut sets in Reading, with strong support acts A1 Bassline, Punks Jump Up and the cream of local DJs including Dolla, Eleven27 and From Disco To Disco.
The response to these nights was incredible and led to a constant flow of booking throughout 2012, which included established acts like DJ Zinc, MJ Cole & Fake Blood alongside newer acts like Redlight, Eats Everything, Bondax, Karma Kid and a jawdropping live set from Disclosure.
The support from local clubbers and former Reading residents returning for the events enabled the night to grow into something not seen in Reading since the days of Checkpoint Charlie and Big Beat Boutique at The Matrix.
Last month with Duke Dumont and Shadow Child was CUBED's first sell-out night and tomorrow's second Birthday looks likely to do the same.
Radio One resident Mosca will headline, alongside Pete Tong favourite Ejeca and Friend Within, who has been hotly tipped by the aforementioned Disclosure. Local favourite Bowler and Reading University student Chazzymax complete the line-up alongside CUBED residents Chris Wells and myself. Tickets will be available on the door from 10pm if you'd like to join the party!
