SINGING her heart out for a shot at stardom, a Tilehurst girl is preparing for the gig of her life.

Laura Mugford, 14, from Dunstall Close in Tilehurst, passed auditions for the new national TeenStar competition, and is now preparing for the regional semi-finals on Sunday, April 7, at Sub 89 in Friar Street.

TeenStar is a talent competition for children and teenagers, organised by Future Music, who produce the Open Mic UK competition which discovered top artists Birdy and Hatty Keane.

Laura, who studies at Redroofs theatre school in Maidenhead, said: "I was quite shocked when my mum first told me she had entered me. It was really scary to be honest but I am excited now.

"I don't really like singing in front of people but I feel better about it now I have done it once.

"When they told me I had got through I was completely shocked, it is the best feeling ever.

"I want to practice a few songs for the next stage, I want to feel confident going in this time. I practiced in front of my friends and they told me I could do it all along."

The winner will be chosen at a glamorous final at London's O2, in June, with big record label representatives there to watch and possibly sign the star - opening up the prospect of

glittering career. Finalists including singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer-songwriters will perform in front of a panel of judges, made up of top music industry figures. Events coordinator Chris Grayston said: "We are looking to find an act that has something unique to offer, another Birdy that can go all the way, with both the ability to deliver a strong live performance but also potential to become a professional recording artist. There is so much talent out there I'm sure we can find that star again!"
