Hull Truck to perform Bronte classic Jane Eyre

A PRODUCTION of an English literary classic is set to be bought to vivid life as 'theatre of the imagination' by one of the most innovative touring theatre companies in the UK.

Emotional theatre: Rebecca Hutchinson as Jane Eyre with Andrew Dowbiggin as Edward Rochester in Hull Truck's production of Jane Eyre.

The Hull Truck Theatre Company will bring their interpretation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre to The Firestation, Windsor, next week - using only three actors and the contents of the truck from the which the Hull-based company got its name.

Hull Truck have cemented their reputation by touring small-scale productions since the company was set up in 1971, and the crew have plenty of experience in making minimal props and a small cast work for them.

Jane Eyre will be no different, with the action unfolding on one set and actress Viktoria Kay taking on nine separate roles.

Director Nick Lane said: "In the book, there is so much travelling, indoors and outdoors, and the theatres we go to do not have the luxury of a revolving set, so we create a theatre of the imagination. We move the chairs and change the lighting a bit. It's good for the audience as they aren't spoon fed and they can imagine it for themselves."

It will be the second time the theatre company has taken to the stage at The Firestation, following a production of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde last year, also directed by Nick.

He added: "You get a lot of adaptations that are multi-cast and have lots of sets.

"We want to make it easier to tour small scale and hopefully give smaller venues a quality piece of theatre."

The Hull Truck Theatre company will perform Jane Eyre at the Firestation Centre for Arts and Culture in Windsor on Friday, February 15, and Saturday, February 16, with curtain up at 8pm.

Tickets cost £12 for adults and £11 for concessions and are available from www.firestationartscentre.com or by calling the box office on 01753 866865.
