Where has another year gone? It seemed like only yesterday the UK was breathing a collective groan at receiving another pair of socks instead of the iPad they so hopefully requested, and before you know it we're here again! The Christmas run-in seems to start earlier every year and so it's getting more and more like summer every year when I'm sitting down in the blazing sunshine thinking about what gigs and tours I'm going to be offering to people for the festive period. Depressing really..

Christmas is a tricky time for any promoter. In a strange way of looking at it, you're directly competing against an open fire (I'm presuming the house has an open fire, just stick with me here), the comfort of the sofa, the ever-giving joy of supermarket booze and all of the big guns going back onto our TV screens. Getting people out of their houses and into a room to see live music is as difficult now as it's ever been and of course the easy option is to book a bunch of the old favourites for one last hoo-rah, although it's never quite the last tour with most of them.

In Reading I've actually taken a bit of a risk this year by booking the likes of Bastille and Scroobius Pip for his debut spoken word tour, and so far it seems as if that risk has paid off, both shows should be sold out (albeit in typically late Reading fashion) in a week or so's time.

What does that tell me about the modern day Christmas period? Frankly, I'm not too sure but it's reassuring to know that taking a risk does sometimes pay off. Maybe Ant and Dec laughing hysterically at others' misfortune in a jungle isn't for everyone and for one I'm glad of that.

When you're all enjoying your family get-togethers, opening your presents and getting some much-needed rest, please do spare a thought for me though. I'll be thinking about what gigs and tours I'll be booking when it's summer again....
