Three Bonzos And A Piano
MAYHEM, mischief and music, Three Bonzos And A Piano - featuring three original members of 1970s performance artists/musicians Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - will be bringing it in bucketloads to Newbury this month.
Original Bonzo members Roger Ruskin Spear, Rodney Slater and Sam Spoons will join Dave Glasson on piano and Andy Roberts on guitar for the show at Arlington Arts Centre on Friday, May 20.
Roger told The Guide how the band were bringing back some Bonzo eccentricity to the stage: "At the moment what we are doing is recreating the old days, way back in the 1960s. Everyone's heard the cds and stumbled across us but they're not quite sure what our stage act is like. It is us getting to grips with having to perform this material as slightly older people!"
The Bonzos were best-known for their Top Five hit, Urban Spaceman, and have been described as 'the musical missing link' between The Goons and Monty Python.
Roger explained: "We never became commercially famous, but we did not realise that a cult following has been fermenting and growing over the years!
"We are able to play smaller venues on this tour, the sort of arts centres where we can get more up and personal to the audience. It is a much more intimate and unique event."
Roger said he was keen for both older fans and new ones to come along and join in the fun. He joked: "Do come along, but I say make sure you have done your homework. Know the lyrics to the songs so you can help us, because we can't remember them!"
Tickets for the Three Bonzos And A Piano show at Arlington Arts Centre, Newbury, cost £15 from www.arlingtonarts.co.uk or 01635 244 246.
