The event was open to all abilities and comprised a 5km off-road, flat run through the park, a 20km bike ride on a gently undulating route around Twyford and Hurst, and a second 5km run in Dinton Pasture Country Park.

The contest was organised by Reading-based Barnes Fitness in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council and with Lexus Reading as headline sponsor, and attracted competitors of all abilities — many from well outside the local area.

Roadworks in Twyford meant the bike course had to be shortened by around 400m, but this did not affect the race record of 1hr 11m 10s that Guildford-based triathlete David Chapman set at the first Dinton Duathlon last November and then successfully defended in March.

Hughes, an age group triathlete who competes for Pro Bike Fit, finished in 1:11:55, with another local runner, Michael Weeks, from Woodley, taking second place in 1:12:33. They were followed home by 16-year-old Reading Athletics Club rising star Alex Sutton, in 1:13:55.

For the women, Julie Rayfield — winner of the Vet40 title in last November’s race — was first across the line in 1:27:01.

A little more than two minutes behind the Thames Valley Tri Club athlete came fellow Vet40 Niki Shaw, from Camborne in Cornwall, in 1:29:12, followed by Caroline Smith, from West London, in 1:31:36.

First Vet40 man home was Oliver Parsons, of Hart Road Runners, in 1:19:42, while first Vet50 Grant Beerling, of Sydenham Wheelers, defended the title he won in March by finishing in 1:16:06 and ninth overall.

First in the Vet60 catergory was Martin Weeks, from Minsterley, Shropshire, in 1:37:23. The first non-podium placed Vet40 woman was Felicity Allen, from Newbury, in 1:34:18.

A total of 13 teams also took part, each comprising one or two runners plus a cyclist. Runner Patryk Huczkowski and cyclist Grzegorz Gacek, both from Hayling Island, Hampshire, together recorded 1:13:45 to take first men’s team and top honours overall for Balancept-Biz Poland.

The first all-women team were PJS Ladies, and the first mixed team Bikingbears.

Race organiser Ellie Barnes said: “The race was the final fixture for 2014 in our Dinton Pastures Country Park running and multi-sports events programme and we’re delighted it finished on such a high note.

“The weather was kind to us, and we’ve had some great feedback. We’re now busy working with Wokingham Borough Council on our 2015 Dinton Pastures programme, and we look forward to both welcoming back regular competitors and seeing many more new faces on the start line next year.”
