Bracknell had a weak squad due to the English Schools Track and Field Championships which were being held at the same time, meaning only 16 intrepid athletes made the journey, leaving Bracknell to struggle.

The winners were Yeovil with 354 points, whilst Bracknell did well to finish fourth with 161 points, behind Eastbourne and Havant respectively.

As usual, Bracknell could draw upon the experience and talent of the Male Throws team as they enjoyed double victories in the Hammer and Discus.

Robert Mungham won the “A” string Hammer, out-throwing his nearest rival by seven metres and Mark Wiseman won the “B” string by a massive twenty metres. Wiseman continued his success, with an eight metre victory in the senior Discus and Jan Drzewiecki completed the throws team day by winning the junior Discus.

The biggest success in the Jumps belonged to Harry Henson as he set a new personal best, enabling him to take second place in the High Jump.

The only male win on the track came courtesy of Calum Wesley in the 400m. Wesley was assisted by Conor Breslin, who achieved a new PB, taking second place in the “B” string race. Sam Collins and Luke Harris both achieved new personal bests as they secured third-placed finishes in the 200m races.

The ladies excelled on the track in the 800m as Emily Read took the honours in the “A” string and Philippa Bowden in the “B” string race. Bowden then went on to win the senior 3k to cap a fine day on the track for herself.

There were some superb individual performances to achieve second-placed finishes as Rosie Fuller excelled in the 200m, Siannah Rayment in the metric mile and Amy Bowers did superbly to grab second in the 100m Hurdles.

Elsehwere, two Wokingham pupils starred at the National Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships recently.

Holme Grange student Matthew Buckner, 13, bagged gold in the 400 metres final in a blistering time of 57.2 seconds at the Alexander Stadium in Brirmingham.

Joshua Shortland was also successful last Wednesday when he claimed bronze in the discus after throwing a 32.52 metres.

Headteacher Claire Robinson said: “Matthew’s and Joshua’s success is a real achievement and a deserved reward for all the hours they have spent training.

“We have a committed sports team at Holme Grange, nurturing and developing talent such as that displayed at the championships.”
