The event, held at Bracknell Leisure Centre’s Athletics Stadium, is organised as part of the Borough Council’s Young People in Sport Scheme and featured 21 local primary schools.

The tried and tested format of three track and field events produced some terrific individual and team performances throughout the competition.

Without doubt the highlight of the championships came in the penultimate race of the day when Lynford Sackey from Crown Wood smashed the Boys 80 metres record in running 10.7 seconds.

He beat the previous record of 11.0 seconds set in 2004 and then equalled in 2005.

However, before his remarkable run there was plenty of other action to entertain the enthusiastic crowd.

The first event is the unique shuttle relay featuring all of the teams. The action was fast and furious, with the teams battling for 10 precious places in the final and the opportunity to compete for double points.

Following the relay heats, the teams dispersed to their various activities with action taking place in two further track events and three field events.

On the track, the first event was the 80 metres sprint heats, with the top two athletes in each race qualifying for the finals later in the day.

Out in the field, Whitegrove won the first of five events finishing just three centimetres ahead of the field in the Girls A long jump. Whitegrove completed the double by winning the B string event.

It was also close in the Boys A long jump, but Ascot Heath held off the Winkfield St Marys challenge.

In the Boys B long jump Ascot Heath and College Town could not be separated, with both boys jumping 4.1 metres.

The shot putt is a bit of a mystery event, but not for Holly Spring in the Girls A section where they retained the title they won last year.

St Margaret Clitherow picked up valuable points by winning the B event.

Meadow Vale putted 8.62m to win the Boys A shot putt and Wooden Hill achieved a fine victory in the Boys B section.

In the ball throwing events, it was no surprise that the stars from the previous week’s cricket festivals did well.

Meadow Vale won the Girls A whilst Holly Spring picked up another maximum in the Girls B. Crown Wood won the Boys A by just over a metre and College Town the Boys B by a over two metres.

The 600m races produced some fascinating battles with the longer distance runners coming into their own.

In the Girls A string just the Winkfield St Marys athlete went under two minutes to win comfortably. Ascot Heath swept home in the B string event.

The Boys B race was similar to the girls race with just one athlete going under two minutes as Birch Hill took a very welcome first place.

The A string was much quicker with nine runners under two minutes. Whitegrove led the way in 1 minute 53.5 seconds.

In the sprint finals, Whitegrove set the standard in the Girls B race, just pipping Sandy Lane, whilst St Margret Clitherow eased home in the Boys B.

Sandy Lane put themselves in with a chance of an overall medal when they won the Girls A string sprint before Crown Wood’s Sackey produced his record-breaking run for an excellent finale on the track.

With all the points totalled prior to the final event, there were still a number of teams that could win the championship. With so many schools needing important points, it was always going to be the team that held their nerve in the relay who were going to win both the race and the championship.

The shuttle relay was a blur of frantic activity and in their eagerness to pick up vital points a number of teams incurred time penalties for faulty changeovers.

Whitegrove settled for secure handovers and the sensible approach paid dividends as they took first place in the relay and first place overall.

Despite a disastrous relay College Town held on to finish second overall and Ascot Heath took third place.

Following their success Whitegrove and College Town will now represent Bracknell Forest at the Berkshire School Games at Wellington College on July 11.
