Trampolinist Parker 'over the moon' to win World Championship gold

EDGBARROW Trampoline Club’s Amanda Parker says she still can’t believe she is the world synchro champion.

Amanda Parker, left, with partner Kat Driscoll after winning gold at the World Championships.

Parker, who lives in Harmans Water, won gold with Kat Driscoll at the FIG Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Bulgaria last weekend.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” Parker told the News. “I feel like it’s still sinking in.

“The World Games [which she won this year] was the best we could have achieved, effectively it’s our Olympic Games.

“But winning gold at the World Championships is my biggest achievement.”

Interestingly, Parker says qualifying sixth of out a possible eight for the final was a blessing in disguise.

“You compete in the final in reverse order so that was the best position we could have been in,” she said. “In 2011 we were leading after the preliminaries so had to go last in the final and that’s a hard position because you’ve got to wait for everyone.

“But this time we got it over and done with and there was less pressure on us.”

She said they went in with nothing to lose and were happy with their performance.

They scored 47.500 - higher than their gold-medal winning performance at the World Games in the summer - but they faced an agonising wait for confirmation.

The Americans and the Chinese both scored less and it was only the Canadian duo - one of whom won gold at London 2012 - that could snatch gold away.

But the Brits were confirmed champions after one of the girls fell off the trampoline.

“Kat burst into tears and I was close to tears myself, it was absolutely amazing,” said the 27-year-old.

Parker trains at Bracknell Trampoline Centre based at Brakenhale School and has been coached for the last 10 years by Sue Lawton.

Becoming world champion has certainly increased the profile of her sport with unprecedented coverage in the national media.

She said: “We’ve definitely put trampolining on the map.”

Parker is already looking to add to her trophy cabinet at the European Championships next April, stating: “I want to maintain the European team title we won last year but I want to finish off my gold medal collection in the synchro.”
