WOKINGHAM Bowling Club opened the new outdoor season with an internal mixed friendly match.

With refreshments provided by new club sponsors, Renaissance Retirement Group, it was the team led by men’s captain David Smith who took the honours with a 147-139 win against the team skippered by ladies captain Sue Thompson.

Top rink for the men included David Fielding, John Rush and Sylvia Pearce who won by 26-7 shots.

The highest scoring rink for the ladies contained Joy Holmes, Margaret Argent and Alun Hughes, winning by 33-8 shots.

Meanwhile, Wokingham were well beaten by 165-75 in a mixed friendly against Windsor & Eton.

Wokingham lost on all rinks in a one-sided affair.

  • SUNNINGDALE Bowling Club defeated Windsor Great Park 97-95 in the first leg of the Ascot Cup, despite winning on only two rinks.

Top rink for Sunningdale was Les Green, Ray Callaghan and skip Don Allston.

Meanwhile, Sunningdale are staging an open day this Saturday in a bid to attract new members.

Visitors can turn up and play for free any time between 11am and 4pm. Flat shoes are required but all other equipment is provided, as is tuition.

A reduced membership fee is also available for those who attend.

The club, based in Whitmore Lane, boasts a number of teams of all abilities and holds a series of social events throughout the year.
