OLD rivalries are set to be renewed at the BMW PGA Championship when stars from Liverpool and Manchester United – England’s two most successful football teams – tee it up in the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am at Wentworth Club on Wednesday, May 24.

Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy will be joined in his Pro-Am group by three members of the famous 1999 Treble-winning team, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel, while former Kop favourites Jamie Redknapp, Robbie Fowler and Daniel Agger will team up alongside European 2018 Ryder Cup Captain, and Liverpool fan, Thomas Bjørn.

They will be part of a star-studded line up for the annual curtain raiser to the BMW PGA Championship, joining a host of celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment including cricketing legends Kevin Pietersen, Brian Lara, Allan Lamb, Graeme Swann and Sir Ian Botham.

Midfielders Scholes and Giggs were part of Manchester United’s revered ‘Class of ’92’ and went on to win a host of major honours as part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant club side, while they also represented England and Wales respectively at international level.

Their former United team-mate, Danish international goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and one UEFA Champions League trophy during his stellar career at Old Trafford.

The trio will join McIlroy who can also boast a bulging trophy cabinet which includes 13 European Tour titles, four of which are Major Championships.

Scholes said: “The Pro-Am at the BMW PGA Championship is always great fun to be part of and it will be a privilege to play alongside Rory again. He is obviously an unbelievable player and a big Man United fan as well, so I’m sure Giggsy, Peter and I will really enjoy the experience at Wentworth.

“We’ve obviously played in plenty of big games together over the years, but it is a bit different with a golf club in your hands.”

Meanwhile, 15-time European Tour winner Bjørn, who was part of the advisory group which helped oversee the multi-million pound revamp of Wentworth’s West Couse, will be able to pass on some course tips to his Celebrity Pro-Am team-mates when he is joined by his fellow Dane Agger, who makes his debut in the popular event.

Defender Agger won 75 international caps for his country and made 232 appearances for Liverpool, and he will be joined on the fairways by Redknapp, a former Liverpool and England midfielder who is now forging a new career as a Sky Sports pundit.

Completing the famous fourball will be Fowler, one of the most popular and prolific Liverpool strikers in the club’s history after netting 183 goals for the Anfield side.

“I played in the Pro-Am last year at Wentworth and it was great fun, so I’m really looking forward to going back in May,” said Fowler. “We’ve got a nice Liverpool fourball with Jamie and Daniel and of course Thomas, who I know is a big Liverpool fan.

“Playing with the Ryder Cup captain will be fantastic. Looking after the three of us might be a bit different to leading 12 of Europe’s best golfers though!”

Tickets for the Celebrity Pro-Am are available from £16.50, alongside general admission tickets for the BMW PGA Championship, onsite parking and grandstand seating.
