THREE local golfers were in the England Disabled Golf team that lost to Wales in the Oldfield Trophy recently.
Wokingham’s Graeme Robertson captained the England team who were beaten 11.5-6.5 over two days by their Welsh counterparts at Cotswold Golf Club in Chipping Norton.
It was Wales’ first victory in the Ryder Cup-style event, with England now leading the series 3-1.
Wales took the early initiative and ended the opening day of fourballs 4-2 ahead.
The visitors followed that by winning the singles matches 7.5-4.5 on the second day to claim the Oldfield Trophy.
The England side also contained Charlie White from Bracknell and Stan Bembenek from Crowthorne.
Robertson said: “There were some really close matches and congratulations must go to Tony Davies and his team who I thought were on top form.
“Although disappointed in the result, we will be determined to win the trophy back in 2017.
“The Cotswolds provided a great test of golf made for a match play event and we enjoyed the camaraderie. The real winner was disabled golf.”
Wales captain Davies added: “I am very proud of my team for their efforts and sportsmanship. It’s great to win the trophy at last, fourth time lucky.”
Robertson also thanked sponsors Bellway Homes, FORE, Business Network and Dangerous Golf plus those who supported the Disabled Golf Association’s DRIVE2DRIVE fundraising campaign.
